Volcano Hybrid vs Volcano Classic is a core practical topic for the Volcano Hybrid. Build a stable baseline with fixed temperature and airflow, adjust one variable per session, and keep short notes to find a reproducible setup.
Check draw rhythm, chamber fill, and cleaning intervals in a regular routine. Most quality gains come from consistency, not from extreme settings.
The Volcano Hybrid is a desktop vaporizer made by Storz & Bickel in Tuttlingen, Germany. It combines convection and conduction heating in a hybrid system and reaches temperatures between 40 and 230 degrees Celsius. Heat-up time is approximately 40 seconds.
Unlike the Volcano Classic, the Hybrid features a digital touch display, built-in Bluetooth connectivity for the Storz & Bickel app, and works with both the valve balloon and the included tube kit. With 270 watts of heating power, a ceramic-coated filling chamber, adjustable automatic shut-off, and dosing capsule compatibility, the Volcano Hybrid stands among the most versatile desktop vaporizers available.
The Volcano Hybrid is operated entirely via touch buttons on the device front. Two temperature displays show the actual temperature (orange, top) and the set temperature (white, bottom) simultaneously.
Touch buttons:
HEAT – turn heater on/off
AIR – turn pump on/off (for balloon filling)
Temperature Plus/Minus – adjust set temperature in 1-degree steps
Plus + Minus simultaneously – switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit
Factory reset:
Pressing and holding the HEAT touch button for 10 seconds resets the device to factory settings: set temperature 180 degrees Celsius, booster temperature 15 degrees above setpoint, automatic shut-off 30 minutes, LCD brightness 80 percent.
Bluetooth can be activated or deactivated by pressing Temperature Minus and AIR simultaneously for 3 seconds.
Temperature Setting & Heating Technology
The Volcano Hybrid covers a temperature range of 40 to 230 degrees Celsius (104 to 446 degrees Fahrenheit). The heater operates at 270 watts and uses a hybrid system of convection and conduction.
Heating process:
After turning on the heater, it takes up to two minutes to reach the set temperature, depending on the setting. Typical heat-up time is around 40 seconds at standard temperatures. The pump briefly turns on to signal acoustically that the set temperature has been reached – this signal can be disabled via the app.
Temperature during vaporization:
Temperature is measured at the heat exchanger, not directly in the filling chamber. The display shows reference values for the attached filling chamber with the pump running. A temperature increase should always be a last resort, as higher temperatures can affect the taste.
Auto shut-off: Factory set to 30 minutes. Individually adjustable via the Storz & Bickel app. The display dims to 30 percent in standby mode (adjustable down to 10 percent via the app).
Valve Balloon – Usage & Tips
The Volcano Hybrid comes with three EASY VALVE Balloons with mouthpiece plus one EASY VALVE Balloon with adapter. The balloon method is the hallmark of the Volcano series.
Step by step:
Grind plant material using the included herb mill
Unscrew the filling chamber cap, fill material up to the lower edge of the hopper
Screw the cap back on, place the filling chamber on the hot air generator and turn clockwise until it stops
Turn on the heater (HEAT) and set the desired temperature
When actual and set temperature match: stretch the valve balloon tight, place it vertically on the filling chamber
Turn on the pump (AIR) – the balloon fills with vapor
Turn off the pump, remove the balloon with the filling chamber, set the filling chamber aside
Insert the mouthpiece into the valve, press lips lightly against it, and inhale slowly
Tip: Only fill the balloon with as much vapor as you intend to use within the next 10 minutes. Vapor condenses on the balloon jacket after a few hours. Do not blow into the balloon.
Tube Kit – Alternative to the Balloon
In addition to the valve balloon, the Volcano Hybrid includes a tube kit (1 meter tube with tube flexer and mouthpiece). This allows direct inhalation without the detour of a balloon.
Usage:
Turn off the pump (the tube is used without the pump)
Place the tube with tube flexer on the preheated, filled filling chamber
Inhale slowly from the tube with mouthpiece for several seconds
The tube should be replaced every two weeks for hygienic reasons. It should only be used by one person at a time. The tube flexer and mouthpiece can be cleaned together with the filling chamber parts.
Airflow: The tube allows up to 30 liters per minute of airflow – powered entirely by lung draw, without the pump. With the valve balloon, there is virtually no draw resistance since the pump actively pushes vapor into the balloon.
Breathing technique: Only inhale about half of what you could. Hold the air in the lungs for a few seconds and exhale slowly.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The filling chamber, filling chamber cap, and tube kit can be disassembled and cleaned in seconds. The screens should be cleaned with the included cleaning brush after each use.
Disassembling the filling chamber cap:
Pull off the cap ring
Push the upper screen out downwards using the cleaning brush handle
Push the cap cylinder out downwards
Disassembling the filling chamber:
Push the filling chamber cylinder upwards out of the filling chamber housing.
Cleaning methods:
Soapy water: Clean screens and cap ring with warm soapy water. All other parts are dishwasher safe.
Isopropyl alcohol: Soak all parts for a maximum of 30 minutes, then rinse for at least one minute under running water. Do not soak plastic parts longer than 30 minutes to avoid discoloration or embrittlement.
Hot air generator: Clean only with a dry or damp cloth. Never immerse in water. The air filter on the bottom should be checked for contamination every four weeks and replaced as needed.
Wear Parts & Replacement Costs
The Volcano Hybrid has three main consumable categories:
Easy Valve Bags (set of 3, ~€20) — replace every 50 to 100 sessions. Visible discoloration or noticeable flavor loss is the cue.
Normal screens (set of 6, ~€6) — every 3 to 6 months or when draw resistance increases.
Tube set (~€15) — replace every two weeks or when discolored.
Seals and filling chamber parts are also sold individually. The air filter (underside) should be checked every 4 weeks and replaced as needed (2 included). Original parts are available from the Storz & Bickel shop or authorized retailers.
Wear Parts & Replacement Costs
The Volcano Hybrid requires several replacement parts over time: The EASY VALVE balloon set (3 balloons + mouthpiece) costs around €25 and should be replaced every 2 weeks with heavy use. A tube replacement set (1 m tube + mouthpiece) runs about €12, also to be swapped every 2 weeks. Normal screens (6-pack) cost about €6 and last 3–6 months. The air filter set (2 pieces) at about €5 should be checked every 4–8 weeks. The filling chamber seal ring costs about €5 and is replaced as needed. A complete Wear & Tear Set with all consumables is available for around €35. Original parts can be found at the Storz & Bickel online shop or authorized retailers.
The Wear & Tear Set contains all consumable parts for the Volcano Hybrid.EASY VALVE XL Replacement Set with balloons and mouthpieces.
Dosing Capsules & Accessories
The Volcano Hybrid is compatible with Storz & Bickel dosing capsules. These small aluminum capsules allow you to pre-fill and store portioned plant material in the capsule magazine.
Benefits of dosing capsules:
Faster change of vaporization material
Cleaner operation – the filling chamber stays virtually residue-free
Pre-portioned for convenience (stored in the magazine)
Dosing capsules are filled using the included filling set with the funnel magazine lid. They are designed as single-use items and should be disposed of after use.

Using Concentrates
For waxes and oils, Storz & Bickel offers Liquid Pads (15 mm diameter). The stainless-steel mesh disc goes inside the filling chamber on top of plant material or on its own, with concentrate spread on it. This prevents anything from dripping into the hot air generator.
Recommended concentrate temperature for the Volcano Hybrid is 170–190 °C — lower than for portable devices since the desktop heater delivers more power and the vapor path is shorter. A set of 8 Liquid Pads costs around €10 and also fits inside dosing capsules together with a Concentrate Pad.
Concentrates & Drip Pads
For waxes and oils, the Volcano Hybrid uses Drip Pads (also called Liquid Pads). The pad is placed on top of the herb in the filling chamber or used on its own together with the filling chamber reducer. A set of 4 Drip Pads costs around €10. The recommended temperature for concentrates is 170–200°C – desktop devices like the Volcano work more efficiently here than portables, so lower temperatures are sufficient. The pads also fit inside dosing capsules with a Concentrate Pad. After use, clean the pad with isopropyl alcohol.
Dosing capsule filling chamber with reducer – compatible with Drip Pads and concentrates.
Storz & Bickel App & Bluetooth
The Volcano Hybrid connects via Bluetooth to the Storz & Bickel web app on your smartphone. The app is not required for operation but offers additional settings.
App features:
Temperature control – read and set temperature directly from your phone
Celsius/Fahrenheit toggle
Auto shut-off – customize the shut-off timer (factory setting: 30 min.)
LCD brightness – adjust standby dimming from 30 to 10 percent

A temperature of 180 degrees Celsius is recommended to start. Lower temperatures (from 130 degrees Celsius) produce lighter, more flavor-forward vapor, while higher temperatures (up to 230 degrees Celsius) create denser vapor. Gradually increasing the temperature is advisable, as higher heat can alter the taste.
The Volcano Hybrid needs up to two minutes to heat up depending on the set temperature. At standard temperatures (around 180 degrees Celsius), it takes about 40 seconds. An acoustic signal (brief pump activation) indicates that the set temperature has been reached.
Yes. The Volcano Hybrid connects via Bluetooth to the Storz & Bickel web app. The app allows you to adjust temperature, auto shut-off, LCD brightness, and other settings. The app is not required – all basic functions are accessible via the touch buttons on the device.
The filling chamber, filling chamber cap, and tube kit can be disassembled without tools. The individual parts can be cleaned in a dishwasher or in isopropyl alcohol (max. 30 min.). The screens should be cleaned with the cleaning brush after each use. The hot air generator itself should only be wiped down with a dry or damp cloth.
Storz & Bickel recommends replacing the valve balloon and mouthpiece every two weeks for hygienic reasons. The balloon is not suitable for storing vapor over longer periods – after a few hours, the vapor condenses on the balloon jacket. Replacement balloon sets are available directly from Storz & Bickel.
The Volcano Hybrid comes with a 2-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. Registering at storz-bickel.com/registration within 4 weeks of purchase extends the warranty to 3 years. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, but not wear parts such as balloons, tubes, and screens.
The Volcano Classic is a desktop vaporizer by Storz & Bickel from Tuttlingen, Germany. On the market since 2000, it is regarded as one of the most durable and reliable vaporizers ever made. It uses pure convection heating and covers a temperature range of 130 to 230 degrees Celsius, adjustable via an analog dial with 9 marked positions.
The Classic is a purely electromechanical device with no digital electronics, no app, no Bluetooth, and no automatic shut-off. Controls are limited to a temperature dial and a rocker switch for the built-in pump. The package includes four EASY VALVE balloons, a filling chamber, an herb mill, and a cleaning kit. The recommended retail price is 398 euros.
The Volcano Classic is a purely electromechanical device. There are no circuit boards, no software, no touchscreen. That is precisely what makes it so durable – what is not digital cannot crash or become obsolete.
Controls:
Temperature dial – Stepless regulator with 9 numbered markings (approximately 130-230 degrees Celsius). The positions correspond to reference values, not exact degree readings.
Heating LED – A green indicator light shows that the heater is active. It turns off when the set temperature is reached and lights up again during reheating.
Pump rocker switch – Turns the built-in air pump on and off. Only needed for filling the balloon.
Design:
The iconic cone shape of the Volcano has remained virtually unchanged since 2000. The housing is made of heat-resistant plastic and stainless steel. The Classic weighs 1,600 grams with dimensions of 20.0 x 18.0 x 20.0 cm. The fixed power cable is attached directly to the device.
Available colors: Onyx (black), Silver, 25 Years Edition (anniversary model), and Evergreen (green).
The Volcano Classic in the Onyx edition
Temperature & Heating System
The Volcano Classic uses pure convection. The built-in pump pushes air through the heating block, where it is heated to the set temperature. The hot air then flows through the filling chamber and extracts the active compounds from the plant material.
Temperature range:
The dial covers a range of approximately 130 to 230 degrees Celsius. The 9 markings on the scale are orientation values – there is no precise digital display. For beginners, position 5 to 6 is recommended, which corresponds to roughly 175 to 190 degrees Celsius.
Heat-up time:
At a medium setting (around 180 degrees Celsius), the Classic needs approximately 5 minutes to heat up. That is considerably longer than the Volcano Hybrid (40 seconds), but this is due to the purely analog heating technology without electronic regulation. The green LED turns off once the temperature is reached.
No auto shut-off: The Classic has no timer and does not turn off automatically. After use, the device must be manually disconnected from the power supply.
The analog temperature dial of the Volcano Classic
EASY VALVE Balloon System
The Volcano Classic works exclusively with the EASY VALVE balloon system. Unlike the Volcano Hybrid, there is no tube option – inhalation always happens through the balloon.
How it works:
Grind plant material in the herb mill and place it in the filling chamber
Place the filling chamber on the hot air generator and turn clockwise until it stops
Set the temperature with the dial and wait until the green LED turns off
Place the EASY VALVE balloon on the filling chamber
Turn on the pump – hot air flows through the filling chamber into the balloon
When the balloon is filled: turn off the pump, remove the balloon
Press the mouthpiece into the valve and inhale slowly
Advantages of the balloon system:
No draw resistance – The pump actively pushes vapor into the balloon. When inhaling from the balloon, resistance is practically zero.
Mobility – The filled balloon can be detached from the device and moved freely. Inhalation is independent of the power source.
Safety – You inhale from the detached balloon, not directly from the hot device.
Tip: Only fill the balloon with as much vapor as you will use within 10 minutes. Vapor condenses on the balloon wall after a few hours.
The Volcano Classic with the balloon attached
Using concentrates:
Storz & Bickel offers Liquid Pads for concentrates. The pad goes into the filling chamber, the concentrate is spread on top. Without the pad, the material would drip through the screens and foul the chamber.
Dial position 5 to 6 (roughly 175-190 degrees Celsius) works well. Fill the balloon as normal. Vapor production is a bit lower than with plant material, but the flavor comes through more intensely. A set of 8 Liquid Pads costs about 10 euros.
A filling chamber adapter for smaller amounts and Storz & Bickel dosing capsules are available separately.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The filling chamber of the Volcano Classic can be disassembled and cleaned in a few steps. All removable parts are dishwasher safe or can be soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
Regular cleaning:
Screens – Brush off with the included cleaning brush after each use. For heavier buildup, soak in isopropyl alcohol (maximum 30 minutes).
Filling chamber – Push the filling chamber cylinder upward out of the housing. Clean all parts with warm soapy water or in the dishwasher.
Cap ring and screens – Pull off the cap ring, push out the screen with the brush handle. Soak in isopropyl alcohol, then rinse for at least one minute under running water.
Hot air generator:
Clean the hot air generator itself only with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never immerse it in water. The air filter on the bottom should be checked for contamination every four weeks and replaced as needed. A set of replacement filters is included in the box.
Plastic parts: Do not soak in isopropyl alcohol for longer than 30 minutes to avoid discoloration or embrittlement.
Top view of the heating chamber
Wear parts & replacement costs:
EASY VALVE balloons — 5-pack around 30 euros. Replace when the balloon turns milky or gets sticky. Roughly every 50 to 100 fills depending on use.
Screens (30 mm) — Normal Screen Set for about 6 euros. Swap when permanently clogged despite cleaning.
Air filter — Included in the box. Check every 3 to 6 months, replace when dirty.
Filling chamber clips — Hold the screen in place. Rarely break, inexpensive to replace if they do.
All parts are available from the Storz & Bickel online store. Overall, the Classic needs very few consumables — the balloons are the main recurring cost.
Comparison: Classic vs Hybrid vs Plenty
Storz & Bickel offers three stationary or handheld vaporizers. Here is a direct comparison of the key differences:
