How to Use - Getting Started
The Volcano Hybrid by Storz & Bickel is a desktop vaporizer with both balloon and whip systems. It combines the classic balloon method with a modern tube attachment and digital temperature control. Place it, plug it in, heat it up - the rest is pretty intuitive.
1. Setup & Power On
Place the Volcano on a stable, flat surface. Plug in the power cable and flip the rocker switch on the side. The display lights up and shows the current temperature. No battery needed - the Volcano runs on mains power only.
2. Choose Your Mode: Balloon or Whip
The Volcano Hybrid gives you two ways to vape:
- Balloon (Easy Valve or Classic Valve) - Great for group sessions. Fill the bag, detach it, and pass it around.
- Whip (Tube) - Better for solo sessions. You draw directly from the tube, similar to a hookah.
Switching between attachments takes just seconds.
3. Fill the Chamber
Unscrew the filling chamber and grind your herbs medium-fine. Load about 0.3 g - or use a dosing capsule for quick chamber swaps. Don't overpack: fill the chamber about three-quarters full so hot air can flow evenly through the material. Screw the chamber back onto the Volcano.
4. Set the Temperature
The digital display shows current and target temps. Range is 40-230 °C (104-446 °F). Starting points:
- 175 °C / 347 °F - Flavor-forward, light vapor
- 185 °C / 365 °F - Balanced: good taste plus solid clouds
- 195 °C+ / 383 °F+ - Dense bags, less flavor, full extraction

5. Fill the Balloon or Draw from the Whip
Balloon mode: Press the AIR button. The fan fills the balloon in about 30 seconds. Detach the bag, attach the mouthpiece, and inhale. A filled balloon keeps vapor fresh for several minutes.
Whip mode: Just draw slowly and steadily from the tube. No button press needed - your breath pulls the vapor through.
6. After Your Session
Turn the unit off, let it cool for a bit. Unscrew the chamber, tap out the contents, brush it clean. Rinse the balloon and whip with isopropyl alcohol once a week - this prevents flavor ghosting and resin buildup.
5 Common Beginner Mistakes
- Filling the balloon too hot - Above 200 °C the vapor gets harsh fast. Start at 175-185 °C instead.
- Grinding too coarse - Big pieces heat unevenly. Medium-fine is the sweet spot.
- Overpacking the chamber - Air needs to flow. Three-quarters full is plenty.
- Not preheating - The first draw from a cold Volcano tastes like nothing. Wait until it hits the target temp.
- Forgetting to replace the Easy Valve - Bags last a few weeks, then get sticky. Storz & Bickel sells replacement sets.
