A butane vaporizer, also called a flame or lighter vaporizer, heats herbs without a battery and without a wall socket. The heat comes from a jet lighter or torch aimed from the outside at a metal cap, a ceramic element or a heater head. How Does a Butane Vaporizer Work?

With the VapCap principle the herb sits in a metal tip under a cap. The cap is heated with the flame until a bimetal disc clicks audibly, the signal that the target temperature has been reached. After the draw, the cap clicks again as it cools. Convection devices such as Sticky Brick or Lotus work differently: you pull hot air through a glass or stainless steel path across the herb, and the flame never touches the material directly. With the Vapman the flame heats a bowl from below (conduction); ball vapes such as the TEMPEST 2 heat a chamber full of balls that in turn heat the air.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages: no battery to age, nothing to charge, ready in seconds, very robust and usually repairable, small and light, dense vapor on demand. Disadvantages: no temperature display, the technique takes practice, a good jet lighter and filtered butane are mandatory, an open flame is not practical everywhere, and the portions are small (on-demand rather than session).

A single or dual jet lighter is enough for VapCaps; larger convection devices and ball vapes heat faster with a triple-jet torch. Use butane that has been filtered several times (5x or finer), otherwise the nozzles clog. If you want to avoid the flame, heat VapCaps with an induction heater: more repeatable, but powered by mains or battery again.
