Key Features & Operation
The Volcano Hybrid by Storz & Bickel is a desktop vaporizer with a balloon and whip system. It combines the classic balloon method with a modern whip connection and digital temperature control. Set it up, plug it in, heat it up – the rest is almost self-explanatory.
1. Setup & Switching On
Place the Volcano on a stable, flat surface. Plug in the power cable and switch the device on using the toggle switch on the side. The display lights up and shows the current temperature. The Volcano does not need a battery – it runs exclusively on mains power.
2. Choose Your Mode: Balloon or Whip
The Volcano Hybrid offers two ways to produce vapor:
- Balloon (Easy Valve or Classic Valve) – The balloon is filled, detached, and inhaled at your leisure. According to Storz & Bickel, a balloon with mouthpiece may only be used by one person for hygiene reasons.
- Whip – Perfect for solo sessions. You draw directly from the whip, similar to a waterpipe.
Both attachments can be swapped in seconds.
3. Loading the Filling Chamber
Unscrew the filling chamber and grind your herb to a medium-fine consistency. Fill with approximately 0.3 g – or use a dosing capsule for quick changeovers. Do not overfill: the chamber should be no more than three-quarters full so that the hot air can flow through evenly. Screw the chamber back onto the Volcano.
4. Setting the Temperature
The digital display shows the current and target temperature. The range runs from 40 to 230 °C. Recommendations for beginners:
- 175 °C – Flavor-forward, light vapor
- 185 °C – Balanced: flavor plus a decent amount of vapor
- 195 °C+ – Dense balloons, less aroma, full extraction

5. Filling the Balloon or Drawing from the Whip
Balloon mode: Press the AIR button. The fan fills the balloon in approximately 30 seconds. Detach the balloon, attach the mouthpiece and inhale. A filled balloon keeps the vapor fresh for several minutes.
Whip mode: Simply draw slowly and steadily from the whip. No button press required – the vapor is drawn by your breath.
6. After the Session
Switch the device off and allow it to cool briefly. Unscrew the filling chamber, knock out the contents, and clean with the brush. The balloon with mouthpiece and the whip are maintenance-free according to the manual: they are not cleaned but replaced every two weeks for hygiene reasons.
The 5 Most Common Beginner Mistakes
- Filling the balloon at too high a temperature – Above 200 °C the vapor quickly becomes harsh. Start at 175–185 °C instead.
- Grinding too coarsely – Coarse pieces heat unevenly. Medium-fine is the sweet spot.
- Overfilling the chamber – The air needs to flow through. Three-quarters full is enough.
- Starting without preheating – The first draw on a cold Volcano tastes of nothing. Wait until the target temperature has been reached.
- Not replacing the Easy Valve in time – Storz & Bickel recommends replacing the balloon and mouthpiece every two weeks for hygiene reasons. Replacement sets are available from the manufacturer.
Temperature Settings & Heating Technology
The Volcano Hybrid covers a temperature range of 40 to 230 degrees Celsius (104 to 446 degrees Fahrenheit). The heating element operates at 270 watts and uses a hybrid system of convection and conduction.
Heating Up:
After switching on the heating element, it takes up to two minutes depending on the set temperature before the target temperature is reached. Typically around 40 seconds at standard temperatures. A brief activation of the pump signals audibly that the target temperature has been reached – this signal can be disabled via the app.
Temperature During Vaporization:
The temperature is measured at the heat exchanger, not directly in the filling chamber. The display shows reference values for the attached filling chamber with the pump running. Increasing the temperature should always be a last resort, as higher temperatures can affect the flavor.
Auto shut-off: Factory-set to 30 minutes. Adjustable individually via the Storz & Bickel App. The display dims in standby to 30 percent (adjustable down to 10 percent via the app).
Valve Balloon – Use & Tips
Which parts are included cannot be fully confirmed with the evidence available here. The balloon method is the hallmark of the Volcano series.
Step by Step:
- Grind the herb material using the herb grinder
- Unscrew the filling chamber lid, fill the material up to the lower funnel edge
- Screw the lid on, place the filling chamber onto the hot air generator and tighten clockwise
- Switch on the heating element (HEAT) and set the desired temperature
- When the target and actual temperatures match: pull the valve balloon taut and place it vertically onto the filling chamber
- Switch on the pump (AIR) – the balloon fills with vapor
- Switch off the pump, remove the balloon with the filling chamber, set the filling chamber aside
- Insert the mouthpiece into the valve, apply light counter-pressure with your lips and inhale slowly
Tip: Only fill the balloon with as much vapor as will be used in the next 10 minutes. Vapor condenses on the balloon walls after a few hours. Do not blow into the balloon.
Whip Attachment – An Alternative to the Balloon

Use:
- Switch the pump off (the whip is used without the pump)
- Place the whip with whip elbow onto the preheated, filled filling chamber
- Inhale slowly for a few seconds through the whip and mouthpiece
The whip attachment should be replaced every two weeks for hygiene reasons. It may only be used by one person at a time. The whip elbow and mouthpiece can be cleaned together with the filling chamber parts.
Airflow: Up to 30 liters per minute can be inhaled through the whip – purely through lung power, without the pump. With the valve balloon, the draw resistance is practically zero, as the pump actively pushes the vapor into the balloon.
Breathing technique: Only inhale half as much as would normally be possible. Hold the air in your lungs for a few seconds and exhale slowly.
How Do I Clean and Maintain My Vaporizer?
The filling chamber, filling chamber lid, and tube unit can be disassembled and cleaned in just a few seconds. The screens should be cleaned after each use with the cleaning brush.
Disassembling the filling chamber lid:
- Remove the lid ring
- Push the upper screen downwards and out using the handle of the cleaning brush
- Push the lid cylinder downwards and out
Disassembling the filling chamber:
Push the filling chamber cylinder upwards and out of the filling chamber housing.
Cleaning methods:
- Soapy water: Clean the screens and lid ring with warm soapy water. All other parts are dishwasher-safe.
- Isopropyl alcohol: Soak all parts for a maximum of 30 minutes, then rinse under running water for at least one minute. Do not soak plastic parts for longer than 30 minutes – otherwise discolouration or brittleness may occur.
Hot air generator: Clean only with a dry or damp cloth. Do not submerge in water under any circumstances. The air filter on the underside should be checked for soiling every four weeks and replaced if necessary.

Using Concentrates
For waxes and oils, Storz & Bickel offers Drip Pads (also known as Liquid Pads) made of stainless steel.
