What is the Puffco Proxy?

Most people know

Puffco as the company behind the Peak Pro — arguably the most popular electric dab rig on the market. The Peak Pro sits at home, plugs into a power outlet and delivers desktop-quality concentrates. But what if you’re on the go?

The proxy answers exactly this question. Launched in 2022, it is Puffco’s first attempt at putting 3D Chamber technology in a portable format. And the result is quite unique – not a shrunken Peak Pro, but a device with its own character.

Very important first: The proxy is a pure concentrate vaporizer. Waxes, extracts, LIVE resin, rosin — that’s his territory. Dry herbs do not belong here. If you are looking for a dry herb vaporizer, you are better off with the Mighty+ or Venty. The proxy plays in a different league.

First impression and processing

When you pick up the proxy for the first time, you immediately notice: The thing doesn’t look like a typical vaporizer. More like a small design object. A pipe bowl made of glass and a modular chassis made of anodized aluminum. The entire package weighs just under 150 grams and fits comfortably in the hand.

The processing? Impeccable. The aluminum feels high quality, no sharp edges, nothing wobbles. The glass bubbler sits firmly, but not so tight that you have to worry about breaking it when removing it. Puffco has obviously invested a lot of time in the fit here.

What’s in the box:

  • The proxy (basic module with 3D chamber)
  • Glass bubbler (pipe attachment)
  • Ball Cap
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Loading Tool
  • Cleaning accessories

A power supply is missing. This will be standard in 2026 and no drama – any USB-C charger with 5V/2A will work. What bothered me, however, was that the quick instructions were extremely brief. For someone who has never used a concentrate vaporizer, there are a few basic pointers missing. How much material should be added, what temperature for what concentrate – none of this is in the instructions. To do this you have to install the Puffco app or search on the internet.

The modular concept

The real specialty of the proxy design is its modularity. The base – i.e. the battery with the 3D chamber – can be removed from the glass bubbler and inserted into other attachments. Puffco itself sells various glass pipes in different shapes and colors. And third-party providers have followed suit.

You can regularly see custom setups on r/puffco: hand-blown glass attachments, silicone cases, even 3D printed adapters. The base fits anything that has the correct diameter. This makes the proxy almost a platform instead of just a device.

Sounds like a marketing gimmick? I thought so too at first. But in practice it is actually practical. If the glass bubbler falls and breaks, simply buy a new attachment. The expensive technology – battery, heating, electronics – is in the base. This saves money and nerves in the long run.

The 3D Chamber — Puffco’s core

The heart of the proxy is the same technology that is also in the Peak Pro: the 3D Chamber. And if you’re wondering what’s so special about this chamber, let me tell you – it’s about the way it’s heated.

Traditional concentrate vaporizers use a heating plate at the bottom of the chamber. Material is placed on top, the plate becomes hot, the concentrate melts and evaporates. This works, but it has one disadvantage: the heat is distributed unevenly. Too hot downstairs, too cold on the walls. Some of the material goes to waste, some is not evaporated properly.

The 3D Chamber solves the problem by heating not only the floor but also the side walls. The concentrate is brought to temperature all around. No hotspot, no cold spots. In practice this means: less material is left as residue, the taste is more consistent and you need less concentrate per session.

Temperature control

The proxy works with four preset heat levels, which Puffco codes in color. At the push of a button you switch through the levels – blue, green, red, white. Puffco doesn’t officially reveal the exact temperatures, but the community has long since measured it:

  • Blue (low): ~230°C — pure taste, thin vapor, ideal for live resin and terpene-rich extracts
  • Green (medium): ~260°C — The all-rounder. Good taste, decent vapor development
  • Red (high): ~290°C — Thicker clouds, stronger extraction, flavor becomes secondary
  • White (max): ~315°C — For thick dabs. Great volume but the terpenes suffer

The temperatures can also be fine-tuned using the Puffco Connect app (iOS and Android). You can customize each of the four levels to the exact degree and create your own profiles. The app is clear and stable — one of the few vaporizer apps that are actually usable. No comparison to what some manufacturers call an app.

My personal sweet spot is at the green level, slightly turned up to around 270°C. I get flavorful vapor with enough substance without it being harsh. For Live Resin I turn it down to blue. For old wax that no longer has much aroma, red works fine.

Steam quality – not all concentrates are the same

This is where the wheat is separated from the chaff. And here the proxy shows why it is worth its price.

The first move on the blue level with fresh live resin: buttery soft. No scratching, no chemical aftertaste, no burning. The terpenes come through clearly — fruity, floral, earthy, depending on the strain. The glass bubbler design also filters the steam through a small amount of water. This cools down and makes the train even gentler.

And that is exactly the point that distinguishes the proxy from cheaper wax pens. A 30-euro wax pen burns half of the material, the steam scratches and tastes like hot metal. The proxy evaporates it. That sounds like a small difference, but it is a fundamental one.

The ball cap makes the difference

The scope of delivery includes a ball cap – a small glass cap with a ball in it that rolls over the concentrate when pulled. Sounds strange. But it works surprisingly well.

Without a ball cap, some of the melted concentrate remains stuck to the chamber walls. The ball distributes it again, pushing it back onto the heating surface. The result: better utilization of the material and more even steam. In the r/puffco community, the ball cap is considered indispensable. “Don’t use the proxy without the ball cap” is basically a mantra there.

Does it really work that well? Yes. The difference is noticeable, not dramatic, but noticeable. Without a ball cap, significantly more residue remains in the chamber. With a ball cap she is almost clean after a session. Less waste, less cleaning effort. Win-win.

Integrated glass bubbler

The proxy does not have separate water filtering, which you can purchase as an option. The glass bubbler is part of the device. You fill in a small amount of water (a few milliliters are enough), place the attachment on the base, and you’re done.

Water filtration makes the vapor noticeably cooler and softer. This is a blessing for those new to concentrates, because otherwise the vapor quickly becomes unpleasant at higher temperatures. Experienced users appreciate it because they can vape at the higher levels without their throat burning.

A disadvantage: water in the device means there is a risk of splashing. If you hold the proxy at an angle or pull too hard, water can get into the chamber. This is not dangerous, but it is annoying – wet concentrate evaporates poorly and the chamber has to dry afterwards. The solution: pull slowly and hold the device somewhat upright.

A battery and charging time

The proxy has a battery of around 1600 mAh. Sounds like little when you compare it to a Mighty+ (3200 mAh). But the comparison is flawed. Concentrate sessions are shorter than dry herb sessions. A dab takes 20-40 seconds, not 5-8 minutes.

In practice I get around 25-30 sessions per charge. That’s easily enough for a day, even with intensive use. If you only do a session in the evening, load once a week.

Charging takes place via USB-C. From empty to full it takes about 90 minutes. That’s okay, not great. Unfortunately, passthrough charging – i.e. using it while charging – is not possible. The proxy switches off when loading. A bit annoying when the battery is empty just when you need it.

A detail that is rarely mentioned: the battery hardly loses any charge in standby. After a week in the drawer I still had over 80%. This speaks for good energy management. Some cheaper devices are half empty after three days of non-use.

Heating time

This is where the proxy shines. It takes about 20 seconds from pressing a button to being ready for use. This is fast enough so that you don’t get impatient and slow enough so that the 3D Chamber comes up to temperature evenly. The Peak Pro takes about the same time, which shows that Puffco has miniaturized the heating technology well.

One more thing: After a session, the chamber needs about 30 seconds to cool down before you can load new material. Not dramatic, but it’s noticeable on a quick second lap.

Cleaning — easier than you think

concentrate vaporizers have a reputation for being a pain to clean. Sticky wax in every crack, alcohol baths, endless Q-tips. The proxy does it slightly better than the competition. Not perfect. But better.

The 3D Chamber can be pulled out of the base. Just pull up and it comes out. Then dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and wipe out the chamber. That’s enough for basic cleaning after each session. Every few weeks you should soak the chamber in ISO – 15 minutes is enough, overnight is better.

The glass bubbler also needs attention. Change the water once a week and rinse with iso. If you forget this, a film will build up inside which will affect the taste. Sounds like work, but it’s done in two minutes.

What I like: The 3D Chamber has a smooth glaze coating. Material sticks less than to ceramic or quartz. After wiping, the chamber is usually sparkling clean again. No stubborn incrustations, no scrubbing necessary.

Tips from the community that actually work:

  • Clean immediately after the session while the chamber is still warm. The concentrate then dissolves more easily.
  • Do a dry hit after each session (without new material). This burns off residue and keeps the chamber cleaner.
  • Do not use toothpicks or metal tools in the chamber. The coating is sensitive.
  • DNever clean the glass bubbler in the dishwasher. Hand wash with ISO.

Proxy vs. Peak Pro — do you have to choose?

This question comes up practically every day in the r/puffco community. And the answer is simpler than you think.

The Peak Pro is a desktop device. It sits on the table, has a larger water tank, a thicker battery and overall delivers more steam per puff. The steam quality is a bit better because the longer steam path in the larger glass attachment offers more cooling. The Peak Pro is the better device for sessions at home. Dot.

The Proxy is for on the go. It fits in a jacket pocket, doesn’t need a flat table to set up and is ready to use in seconds. The vapor quality is excellent for a portable device — but not quite at Peak Pro levels.

The technology is identical. Both use the 3D Chamber, both run on the same app, both have the same temperature levels. The difference lies in the size and therefore the amount of steam that comes through per puff.

Many users on Reddit own both and use the Peak Pro at home and the proxy on the go. If you only want to buy one device and mainly vape at home: Peak Pro. If portability is important or you already have a desktop rig: Proxy.

What the community says

The proxy has generally been received positively on r/puffco. The most common points of praise: steam quality, workmanship, modular design. The most common criticisms: price (in the USA the RRP was $299, in Europe sometimes significantly more), battery life could be longer, and the dependence on the app for fine temperature adjustment annoys some.

One user summed it up well: “It’s the best portable dab device I’ve used, but it’s competing against a lot of cheaper options that do 80% of the job.” That’s true too. If you just want to smoke a dab quickly without worrying about flavor nuances, you can get by with a cheaper wax pen.

But once you’ve tasted the difference — even vaporization, clean taste, no burning — you don’t want to go back. This is what the most critical voices in the community also say. The proxy spoils a cheap wax pens.

A topic that keeps coming up: the durability of the 3D Chamber. Some users report that the heating performance decreases after 6-12 months of intensive use. Puffco sells replacement chambers, but they cost 50-80 EUR. This should be taken into account as ongoing costs. To be fair, you have to say: If you clean your chamber regularly, you have this problem much less often.

Who is the proxy suitable for – and who is it not suitable for?

The proxy is not an entry-level device in the classic sense. Not because of the operation – it’s simple. But because concentrate vaporizers require a certain basic knowledge. How much material do I load? Which temperature for which concentrate? How do I clean the chamber without damaging it? These are questions that a dry herb vaporizer does not raise.

Good for:

  • Concentrate enthusiasts who don’t want to forego quality on the go
  • Peak Pro owners looking for a portable counterpart
  • People who value taste and consistent vaporization
  • Collectors and tinkerers who appreciate the modular design

Less suitable for:

  • Dry-Herb user (the proxy can NOT vaporize dry herbs!)
  • Absolute beginners with no experience with concentrates
  • If you need maximum battery life (outdoor trips, festivals)
  • Price-conscious buyers – cheaper wax pens are available from 30 EUR

Price history and current price

The Puffco Proxy launched with an MSRP of $299. Since then, the price has fallen significantly – especially in the European market. You can currently find it from around 89 EUR in an international price comparison. This is a massive price drop and makes the proxy one of the best deals in the concentrate segment.

Check out the price history above before you buy. The prices sometimes vary greatly depending on the shop and the promotion. There are regularly good deals, especially around Black Friday and 4/20.

Fazit — lohnt sich der Puffco Proxy?

Der Puffco Proxy macht vieles richtig. The 3D Chamber delivers even, flavorful vaporization. Der Glas-Bubbler kühlt den Dampf spürbar. The modular design is cleverly thought out and extends the service life. The workmanship is at a level that you would expect from a premium manufacturer.

But it is also a niche product. A concentrate vaporizer for people who know what they want. Not a jack of all trades that can do everything. If you want to vaporize dry herbs, you need a different device. Anyone who has never worked with concentrates should read up on it beforehand.

For the current street price of around EUR 89, however, you get a hell of a lot of equipment. A year ago you would have paid twice as much. If you’re looking for a portable concentrate vaporizer that does more than the usual wax pens, the Proxy is one of the best options on the market. The r/puffco community sees it the same way — and they’re not exactly known for uncritical adulation.

Rating: 8/10 — Excellent vapor quality and clever design, penalties for battery life and learning curve for concentrate newbies.
