Which concentrates work in a dab pen?
Not every concentrate is equally suitable. The consistency determines how easily it can be loaded and how cleanly it vaporises.
Wax and Crumble
Wax is soft and malleable — it can be placed directly on the coil with a dab tool. Crumble is drier and breaks apart during loading, but vaporises more evenly. Both are suitable for all dab pens on the list. Ideal temperature: 180–220 °C.
Shatter and Budder
Shatter is glass-like and brittle. Break off small pieces and place them on the coil — do not preheat, otherwise it melts into the chamber before it vaporises. Budder is creamy and can be handled similarly to wax. Temperature: 200–260 °C.
Live Resin and Rosin
Live Resin contains more terpenes than other concentrates — the flavour is more intense. Low temperatures (150–200 °C) preserve the terpenes best. Rosin is produced without solvents (heat + pressure) and is therefore particularly pure. Both types are sticky — easiest to load with a heated dab tool.
Temperature guide: The right heat for concentrates
Temperature affects flavour, vapor density and effect. Low = more flavour, less vapor. High = denser vapor, fewer nuances.
| Range | Temperature | Result | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 150–200 °C | Mild vapor, strong aroma | Live Resin, terpene focus |
| Medium | 200–260 °C | Balanced: flavour + vapor | Wax, Shatter, all-rounders |
| High | 260–370 °C | Dense vapor, little aroma | Thick wax, maximum extraction |
Tip: Start low (180 °C) and increase in 10-degree steps. That way you find the sweet spot for your material without losing flavour.
Dab Pen vs. E-Rig: What is the difference?
Both vaporise concentrates, but the form factor and features differ significantly:
| Feature | Dab Pen | E-Rig |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Pen (15–50 g) | Compact device (150–400 g) |
| Water filter | Rare (only with WPA) | Often built in |
| Temperature | 2–3 levels or fixed | Precise degree adjustment |
| Price | 17–90 € | 36–260 € |
| Cleaning | Replace coil | Clean chamber |
| Vapor quality | Direct, intense | Smoother, cooled |
When is an E-Rig worth it? If you use concentrates regularly and value smooth vapor, you benefit from the water filter. For occasional, quick sessions on the go, a pen is enough.
Buying guide: What should you look for?
Coil types compared
Ceramic: Even heat, lower risk of combustion, better flavour at low temperatures. The best choice for beginners.
Quartz: Heats up faster and delivers more intense hits. Requires more control — if the temperature is too high, the material burns. Ideal for experienced users.
Titanium: Durable and robust, withstands many cleaning cycles. Can have a metallic aftertaste at high temperatures. Available in the Stone Smith Slash.
Battery capacity
Under 400 mAh (Linx Hermes 3, XVape Cricket) is enough for 2–4 sessions. 650–1,000 mAh is comfortable for everyday use. Over 1,300 mAh (Yocan Orbit with 1,700, Katalyzer Mini with 1,300) lasts a full day. USB-C with passthrough charging (Puffco Pivot, Dr. Dabber XS) allows use while charging.
Cleaning and care
Concentrates leave sticky residues — regular cleaning is essential. After every session: keep the coil warm and wipe away residue with a cotton bud. Every 5–10 sessions: soak the coil and mouthpiece in isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) for 20 minutes, then let them dry. Replace coils every 2–4 weeks, depending on frequency of use.
Tip for E-Rigs: Rinse the water bubbler with warm water after every session. Leaving water standing overnight leads to limescale deposits.
510 thread vs. proprietary connections
Some dab pens use the universal 510 thread (Flowermate WiX, Divine Crossing V5, Boundless Terp Pen Spectrum). Advantage: coils and attachments from different manufacturers fit. Others (Puffco, Dr. Dabber) use their own plug-in systems — replacement parts only from the manufacturer. In our list, WiX, Cricket and Slash are 510-compatible.
Dab Pen vs. Vape Pen
Vape pens use pre-filled oil cartridges with a 510 thread. Dab pens load raw concentrate directly onto the heating coil. Dab pen advantage: no need to buy cartridges again, full control over material and temperature. Disadvantage: regular cleaning needed. For cartridges, see our best vape pens list.

- E-Rigs (Puffco, Dr. Dabber, Yocan) offer water filtration — worth it for daily use
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dab pen?
A portable vaporizer for concentrates (wax, shatter, crumble). The material is loaded directly onto a heating coil. No torch, no dab rig needed.
What is the difference between a dab pen and an E-Rig?
Dab pens are pen-shaped (15–50 g) with simple operation. E-Rigs like the Puffco Pivot or Yocan Orbit are larger (150–400 g), but offer built-in water filtration, more precise temperature control and app connectivity. Both vaporise concentrates.
How much concentrate per load?
Most chambers hold 0.1–0.3 g. A rice-grain-sized amount is enough for 3–5 puffs.
What temperature for concentrates?
150–200 °C for mild vapor and strong aroma (Live Resin). 200–260 °C for a balance of flavour and vapor (wax, shatter). 260–370 °C for maximum vapor density.
How often do I need to change the coil?
With daily use, every 2–4 weeks. Ceramic coils last longer than quartz coils. A burnt flavour is the signal to replace it.
Can I use dab pens with oil cartridges?
Only if the pen has a 510 adapter (e.g. XVape Cricket). Most dab pens are built for concentrates. For cartridges there are vape pens.
How long does a dab pen last?
With normal care, 1–3 years for the device. The coil is the wear part and is replaced every 2–4 weeks. Batteries lose noticeable capacity after 300–500 charge cycles.

Why Dab Pen?
Dab pens (also wax pens) have a built-in heating chamber for concentrates like wax, shatter, rosin, or live resin. Unlike cartridge pens, you load a small amount of extract directly into the chamber. Heat-up time 10-30 seconds, then strong vapor from little material. Popular coil types: quartz (flavor), ceramic (efficiency), titanium (durability).
Why Dab Pens?
- Portable Dabbing: Dab rig experience on the go. No butane torches, no glass setup, no table needed.
- Strong Vapor Production: Concentrates with 60-90% potency — significantly stronger than flower. Small amount goes far.
- Quick Heat-Up: 10-30 seconds to first hit. Faster than most flower vaporizers.
- Multiple Coil Options: Quartz for flavor, ceramic for even heat, titanium for durability. Swappable.
Dab pens typically cost 40-150 EUR. Entry models often have just one temperature, pricier models offer 3-5 levels or stepless control. Clean coils regularly or replace every 2-4 weeks.

Dab Pen Tips
Dab pens vaporize wax, shatter, or other concentrates. How to use your dab pen optimally:
- Start with small amounts. A rice-grain-sized piece is enough for 2–3 hits. Too much material overloads the chamber.
- Keep coil clean. Wipe the heating coil after each session with cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol (when cooled).
- Let cool between hits. Dab pens get hot quickly. Wait 10–15 seconds between hits.
- Ceramic coils for flavor. Quartz heats faster, but ceramic coils deliver purer flavor and last longer.
