- Controller with coil or rig attachment: A classic e-nail consists of a controller, heating coil, and nail. It regulates to the degree and runs on mains power without interruption. Rig attachments such as G Pen Connect or Yocan Torch are small battery-powered devices that plug directly into the joint of the rig. They are easier to use but typically offer only a few temperature settings.
- Coil size to match the nail: The heating coil must fit snugly around the nail. Common diameters are 16, 20, 25, and 30 mm, plus flat coils for flat dab dishes. Anyone who already owns a nail should measure its diameter before purchasing.
- Nail material: Titanium is durable and heats up quickly. Quartz delivers clean flavour but is fragile. Ceramic retains heat evenly but takes longer. Hybrid nails combine a titanium body with a dish made of quartz or ceramic.
- Wired or wireless: Wired controllers run off the mains and operate indefinitely. Wireless e-nails have a built-in battery and work without a cable to the rig, but only last for a limited number of dabs per charge.
