PAX Flow Review: PAX’s First Hybrid Portable Vaporizer

PAX rewrote the playbook with the Flow. Every previous PAX portable was conduction-only. The Flow is their first hybrid – convection and conduction combined in a 93-gram shell. No other manufacturer has packed hybrid heating into something this light.

Quick summary: 225 °C max temperature (higher than any Storz & Bickel), 35-second heatup, 3,500 mAh battery, USB-C with passthrough charging, full app control via Bluetooth. No display – LED indicators and haptic feedback instead. 93 grams, lighter than a PAX Plus (95 g) and nearly three times lighter than a VENTY (252 g).

Design and Build

Anodized aluminum, smooth finish, unmistakably PAX. The Flow looks like a PAX Plus from a distance but feels different in the hand – marginally wider, barely heavier. 93 grams disappears in a pocket. The form factor is closer to a thick pen than a typical vaporizer.

PAX skipped the display again. Instead, colored LEDs and vibration patterns communicate temperature, battery level, and operating mode. If you have used any PAX before, you already know the system. First-timers pick it up in about ten minutes. No display also means nothing to crack or scratch – practical for a device that lives in pockets.

The mouthpiece sits flush with the body. Pop it off for cleaning. The oven is on top – remove the lid, pack your material, replace the lid.

Heating: The Big Change

Every portable PAX before the Flow used pure conduction. PAX 2, PAX 3, PAX Plus, PAX Mini – all contact heating through the oven walls. It worked, but it could not match the vapor quality of hybrid devices like the Venty or Mighty+.

The Flow changes that completely. PAX now combines conduction from the oven walls with convection from hot air drawn through the material. The result: denser, tastier vapor than any previous PAX. Extraction is more even because the material heats from all sides, not just where it touches the chamber wall.

225 °C max temperature stands out. The VENTY tops out at 210 °C, the Mighty+ at 210 °C. PAX goes 15 degrees higher. Most users will never need it – the sweet spot sits between 180 and 200 °C – but the headroom is there for maximum extraction sessions.

35 seconds to reach temperature is reasonable. Not as fast as the VENTY (20 s) but faster than the Mighty+ (about 60 s). Press the button, pocket it, wait for the vibration.

App and Controls

The PAX app is native on iOS and Android – not a web app like Storz & Bickel uses. It connects over Bluetooth and lets you:

  • Set temperature in 1 °C increments (up to 225 °C)
  • Create and save custom experience modes
  • Track sessions and usage patterns
  • Adjust device settings (vibration intensity, LED brightness)
  • Update firmware

Without the app, the Flow works on preset temperature levels cycled via the device button. Haptic feedback confirms every change. No display means fewer things to break – a deliberate trade-off that makes sense for a pocket device.

Battery Life

3,500 mAh, non-removable. USB-C charging with passthrough – vape while it charges. PAX rates it for 8 to 10 sessions per charge. Real-world numbers depend on temperature and draw length. At 185 °C with standard 5-minute sessions, 8 is realistic. At 225 °C with heavy use, expect closer to 6.

For comparison: the VENTY has 5,3200 mAh (significantly more), the Mighty+ has 3,260 mAh (slightly less). Daily users will charge nightly. For normal use, one charge covers a full day easily.

Vapor Quality

This is where PAX made the biggest leap. The PAX Plus was decent but could not compete with a VENTY or Mighty+ on flavor. Pure conduction has limits – uneven heating, hot spots near the chamber walls, the center of the bowl extracting last.

The Flow’s hybrid system fixes this. The convection component ensures airflow through the entire load. Flavor is clean, especially on the first few draws. Visible vapor production is noticeably denser than the PAX Plus. Compared to the VENTY, vapor quality is in the same tier – with the caveat that the VENTY has adjustable airflow and the Flow does not.

Draw resistance on the Flow is medium – not too open, not too tight. Similar to the PAX Plus, sitting between the VENTY’s open airflow and the tighter draw of a Crafty+.

What Changed from the PAX Plus?

Feature PAX Flow PAX Plus
Heating Hybrid (convection + conduction) Conduction
Max temperature 225 °C 215 °C
Heatup time ~35 s ~22 s
Battery 3,500 mAh 3,040 mAh
App Native (iOS/Android) Native
Weight 93 g 95 g
MSRP €299 €249
Warranty 2 years 2 years

The headline difference is the heating system. Hybrid vs. conduction – you notice it on the first draw. Denser vapor, cleaner taste, more uniform extraction. The higher max temperature and larger battery are bonuses. Heatup is a bit slower (35 s vs. 22 s) because the hybrid system needs more energy to prime.

Accessories

  • Water pipe adapter (WPA): 14 mm fitting, turns the Flow into a bong-ready device
  • Flat mouthpiece: Included by default, replacements available
  • Half-pack lid: For smaller loads, good for microdosing
  • Cleaning kit: Isopropyl wipes and pipe cleaners

No dosing capsules. PAX uses direct loading – same approach as the Veazy from Storz & Bickel. If you want capsules, look at the VENTY or Mighty+.

Who Is the PAX Flow For?

People who want design, portability, and hybrid vapor quality in one package. The Flow sits between the VENTY (heavier, display, adjustable airflow, more expensive) and the Mighty+ (heavier, display, dosing capsules, cheaper). The Flow is lighter than both and relies more heavily on app control than physical buttons.

Not for: users who need a display, want dosing capsules, or expect a replaceable battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PAX Flow really a hybrid vaporizer?

Yes. It combines conduction from the oven walls with convection from hot air drawn through the material. Every previous PAX portable was conduction-only.

Do I need the app?

No. The Flow works without the app using preset temperature levels. The app adds precise temperature control, custom profiles, and session tracking. It is optional.

Do dosing capsules fit the PAX Flow?

No. The Flow uses direct loading only. For capsule compatibility, consider the VENTY or Mighty+.

Can I use the PAX Flow with a water pipe?

Yes, with the optional 14 mm WPA adapter sold separately.

How does the PAX Flow compare to the VENTY?

Both are hybrid portables. The VENTY has a display, adjustable airflow, and a larger battery. The Flow is much lighter (93 g vs 252 g), reaches higher temperatures (225 vs 210 °C), and costs less. Vapor quality is comparable.

Is the upgrade from PAX Plus worth it?

If vapor quality was your main complaint with the PAX Plus, yes. Hybrid heating is a noticeable step up. If you are happy with the Plus and do not need higher temperatures, the Plus still works fine.

Does the PAX Flow support passthrough charging?

Yes. You can use it while connected to USB-C power.

How do I clean the PAX Flow?

Remove the mouthpiece, brush out the oven, run a pipe cleaner with isopropyl through the vapor path. Recommended every 5 to 10 sessions.

Verdict

The PAX Flow is the best PAX ever made. Hybrid heating closes the gap to Storz & Bickel, and the 93-gram weight is unmatched in this class. 225 °C ceiling, full app control, USB-C passthrough – technically, there is little to criticize.

What is missing: display, dosing capsules, adjustable airflow. If you need those, get the VENTY. If you want the lightest hybrid portable on the market and can LIVE with LED controls, the Flow is your vaporizer.
