A dry herb vaporizer heats dried herbs, flowers or tobacco to between 160 and 230 °C, releasing active compounds without burning the material. According to a study by Pomahačová et al. (Journal of Chromatography, 2009), vaporization at 200 °C releases the desired compounds while reducing combustion byproducts. The result is vapor that is gentler on the lungs and richer in flavor than smoke.

How Big Is the Market?

We currently compare over 890 vaporizers from 190+ brands across 270+ shops in 50 countries. Around 9,000 price updates flow into our database every day. The Storz & Bickel Venty alone appears in over 140 shops, the Mighty+ in 136 and the Volcano Hybrid in 135. Prices for the same model can differ by more than €100 depending on the shop and country.

Convection, Conduction or Hybrid?

Of the 890+ models in our database, 372 use conduction, 302 use convection and 137 use a hybrid system. With conduction, the herb sits directly on a hot surface. This means fast heat-up times but can cause uneven heating. Convection passes hot air through the herbs, producing more even vapor and better taste, though it uses more energy. Hybrid devices combine both methods: fast heat-up with consistent extraction. 27 devices in our database use induction heating, a newer technology with particularly fast heat-up times.

Portable, Desktop or Butane?

490 models in our comparison are portable battery-powered devices, 118 are desktop vaporizers with mains power and 143 run on butane lighters (e.g. DynaVap). Portable vaporizers cover the largest part of the market. Desktop units deliver thicker, cooler vapor, while butane models work without electronics and tend to be cheaper. There are also 35 ball vapes, a growing niche with a dedicated following, and 107 vape pens for 510 cartridges.

What to Look For When Buying

The five key buying criteria at a glance:

1. Heating method — Convection for flavor, conduction for speed, hybrid for both.
2. Heat-up time — From 5 seconds (Tinymight 2) to over 2 minutes (older desktops).
3. Vapor path material — Ceramic or glass delivers cleaner taste than plastic.
4. Battery and charging — Pass-through lets you use while charging. Replaceable batteries extend device life.
5. Dosing capsules — Keep the chamber clean and simplify loading on the go.

Warranty periods range from 2 to 10 years depending on the manufacturer.

For products available in at least three shops, the average price difference between the cheapest and most expensive offer is around €120.
