What makes MEDIC 2 a medical device?
STORZ & BICKEL classifies MEDIC 2 under DIN EN 60601, the safety standard for medical electrical equipment. The device is TÜV-certified and produced under a quality management system certified to EN ISO 13485. Its intended use is the vaporization of dronabinol (THC) or cannabinoids from hemp flowers to create an aerosol for inhalation, for therapies prescribed by a physician at home, in a hospital or in a doctor’s office.
HYBRID is certified as a household appliance under DIN EN 60335 and, for the US market, UL 8139. The manufacturer names herbs such as eucalyptus, lavender, chamomile and lemon balm as its intended material. Both devices use the same patented combination of convection and conduction heating.
The medical route also changes how MEDIC 2 is bought. It is sold through the manufacturer’s medical platform vapormed.com and carries a German pharmacy number (PZN). In Germany, health insurers often reimburse it when a cannabis-flower therapy is already approved and a physician prescribes the vaporizer; most insurers ask for a cost estimate from the pharmacy first.
Temperature and controls
MEDIC 2 tops out at 210 °C, HYBRID at 230 °C. Both start at 40 °C and reach 180 °C in about 40 seconds, depending on the filling and room temperature. You set the temperature on the touch display of either device and switch the heater and the air pump with separate buttons.
HYBRID adds Bluetooth. It is one of the devices supported by the S&B Web App, which runs in a Bluetooth-capable browser: Chrome or Edge on Windows, Chrome on Android, Bluefy on iOS and macOS. MEDIC 2 is operated on the device only.
Balloon, tube and what comes in the box
Both models fill a valve balloon with the built-in pump or let you inhale directly through the tube. In tube mode the pump stays off: the heated filling chamber adds conduction heat, so the first draw already produces vapor. The tube delivers up to 30 liters of air per minute.
The balloons differ. MEDIC 2 uses the MEDIC VALVE system with a standard 1.25-liter balloon. STORZ & BICKEL specifies that each balloon and tube is used by one person only and replaced after 70 uses or 14 days from first use, whichever comes first. For reproducible doses, each filling of the chamber should fill exactly one balloon. HYBRID uses EASY VALVE balloons and ships with three balloons with mouthpiece plus one with adapter.
MEDIC 2 also includes a herb mill, a dosing capsule with adapter for small amounts, a filling pad and an air filter set. The HYBRID filling chamber is ceramic-coated and holds 6.5 cm³, about 600 mg. The MEDIC 2 tube set does not fit the original VOLCANO MEDIC, because the older model lacks the conduction heating the tube mode relies on.
Cleaning and replacement parts
For MEDIC 2, STORZ & BICKEL documents a medical cleaning routine for the filling chamber, tube elbow and mouthpiece: brush under running water, soak in 70 % isopropyl alcohol for five minutes, rinse for at least 30 seconds, then dry. The parts can also go through a dishwasher at 70 °C or a washer-disinfector program. Balloons and tubes are not cleaned; they are replaced on the 70-use or 14-day schedule.
When an insurer pays for accessories, the order should name the PZN of MEDIC 2 together with the part number and full product name. HYBRID parts such as EASY VALVE replacement sets and filling chambers are sold through regular retail.
Availability in the United States and the United Kingdom
STORZ & BICKEL states that its medical vaporizers are not approved for sale in the United States and some other countries, and it does not offer VOLCANO MEDIC 2 or MIGHTY+ MEDIC there. US buyers get the household HYBRID instead, built to UL 8139. The market module above therefore leaves MEDIC 2 out of US offers even when a foreign shop would ship.
In Great Britain, medical devices are registered with the MHRA before they are placed on the market. UK government guidance says such a registration must not be presented as accreditation, approval or endorsement by the regulator.
