Ruby Twist, Ruby Twist Pro, WOHW or Universal Baller? The four ball vapes compared

In short: Ruby Twist, Ruby Twist Pro and Wireless One Hit Wonder (WOHW) come from Crossing Technology in Shenzhen, while the Universal Baller is made by Terp Chasers Club in the USA. All four are mains-powered, and none has a battery. The Ruby Twist is the most affordable entry-level option, while the Pro adds a titanium bowl, timer and a second ball mode. The WOHW delivers one or two very dense hits wirelessly per heat-up. The Universal Baller can operate with or without a cable and is the only one with an airpath made entirely of glass and quartz — but it costs around twice as much as the WOHW.

How does a ball vape work?

A heating coil connected to a PID controller heats a housing filled with small balls — ruby, or corundum, in all four devices. The balls store heat and provide a large surface area for the air flowing through them. When you inhale, the air rapidly becomes hot and passes through the herb in the bowl above. If the bowl sits above the heater without touching it, this is called injector operation with pure convection. An important point for everyday use: Short times such as “under 45 seconds” refer to the coil and controller. Depending on the device, it takes several minutes for the balls to become thoroughly heated.

Ruby Twist: the affordable entry-level option

The Ruby Twist is the successor to the Thermal Twist. Inside a titanium housing, the rubies surround a fixed insert that guides the air in a spiral — hence the name. Heating is provided by a 20 mm coil connected to the Micro-PID, adjustable in 1-degree increments and equipped with automatic shut-off. Crossing recommends 270 to 330 °C, while a standard bowl runs at around 305 °C.

The box includes a 14 mm glass bowl with a side carb and an adapter to 18.8 mm. The bowl holds approximately 0.2 to 0.4 g. The manufacturer does not state the exact number of rubies; tests refer to around 230 faceted stones, while sources disagree about their size (2.5 or 3 mm).

Strengths: lowest price of the four, indefinitely long wired sessions, upgradeable to Pro specifications later. Weaknesses: less thermal mass than the more expensive devices, exposed hot parts, basic controller, water pipe required.

Ruby Twist Pro: what the Pro version actually changes

The Ruby Twist Pro uses the same Micro-PID, 20 mm coil and Twist airflow platform. The specific differences are:

There is no documented difference in the display, presets or app: Both have the same controller with a digital display. According to Crossing, the Pro can be used in “Pure Convection” mode or in “Hybrid” mode by preheating the bowl for 15 to 25 seconds. Anyone who already owns a Ruby Twist can bring it up to Pro specifications with an upgrade kit.

Wireless One Hit Wonder: wireless, but without a battery

The name is often misleading. The WOHW V2 has no battery. The ruby-filled head sits in a dock with a 25 mm coil and is heated there. You then remove it, place it on the water pipe and take one or two hits. Afterwards, it goes back into the dock. Crossing itself states that the controller must remain connected to the mains during use. Only the journey from the dock to the pipe is wireless — the WOHW is not designed for use on the go.

You can turn the head around: one way for injector use, the other for diffuser use. The titanium Matrix Bowl has 14.4 and 18.8 mm connections, accompanied by a 21.5 mm diffuser and a ring to 22.15 mm. This also makes it compatible with bowls from other manufacturers. Tests describe the first hit as very dense and the second as noticeably weaker because the stored heat decreases. From cold, the head takes about five minutes to heat up, followed by 30 to 60 seconds in the dock each time. Those who prefer wired vaporizing can convert the WOHW to wired operation with a conversion kit.

WOHW V1 or V2?

Buy the V2: It retains heat for longer and fits more bowls. The V1 is only worthwhile as an inexpensive clearance item.

Depending on the retailer, the stated number of balls in the V2 ranges from 220 to 490, depending on whether it is filled with 2.5 or 3 mm balls. The manufacturer’s specification is considered authoritative here. Within the community, the stainless-steel V2 is regarded as a substantial upgrade over the titanium V1 because it retains heat for longer; many users therefore run it at a slightly lower temperature.

Universal Baller: four devices in one

Terp Chasers Club sells the Universal Baller as a 4-in-1 device: wireless with quartz, wireless with metal, wired with quartz, and wired with metal. With the quartz insert, the air touches only glass and quartz; without it, the air passes through titanium. The housing contains 1,000 2 mm rubies, while the manufacturer states that 500 are sufficient in wireless quartz mode. Heating is provided by a 200 W coil measuring 25 × 30 mm, which is significantly larger than those used by the Ruby Twist and WOHW. The PID controller and coil are included in the Full Kit.

The temperature ranges differ by mode: 204–299 °C wired and 254–321 °C wireless. Terp Chasers Club describes the wired modes as hybrid with conduction and the wireless modes as convection. The manufacturer provides a two-year warranty for the controller and coil; glass and quartz are excluded.

In tests and within the community, the Universal Baller receives the best ratings for flavour. The main objection is the price: One tester estimates that less expensive devices deliver around 80% of the performance for less than half the cost. It also requires elaborate assembly (the manufacturer explicitly warns against using force when screwing the housing together), has a fragile quartz insert and is sold through manufacturer pre-orders.

• Ruby Twist: Often praised for its value for money and its effectiveness with a small bowl. Anyone complaining about “no clouds” is almost always advised to raise the temperature and preheat for longer. Criticism focuses on the restricted airflow with larger loads and the basic controller. Most users settle on controller temperatures between 270 and 315 °C.
• Ruby Twist Pro: According to many users, the round balls provide greater airflow and cause less coughing. Others consider the difference from the original minor and instead recommend upgrading an existing Ruby Twist with balls and a screen.
• WOHW: Regarded as very powerful for the price and versatile. The main disadvantage is the need to reheat between bowls. The stainless-steel V2 retains heat noticeably longer than the titanium V1. Nobody in the discussions considers the WOHW a battery-powered device; “wireless” means there is no cable attached to the head.
• Universal Baller: Most frequently praised for its flavour. Broken quartz discs have been reported several times; Terp Chasers Club attributed this to a batch containing too many balls and replaced the parts. Other criticisms include sticking threads and the high price in Europe.

The clearest rule of thumb from the discussions is: Ruby Twist for sessions with several people, WOHW for solo users, Universal Baller for flavour. In direct comparisons between the WOHW and Universal Baller, many users consider the difference smaller than the price would suggest — even the manufacturer of the Universal Baller wrote in one discussion that he did not see a major difference.

This mainly depends on whether you vaporize alone or with others and how much you value flavour.

• First ball vape, tight budget: Ruby Twist. Same platform as the Pro and upgradeable later.
• You want a titanium bowl, both ball modes and a timer: Ruby Twist Pro. The premium pays for additional features, not greater heating power.
• You usually vaporize alone and like individual, very dense hits: WOHW V2, with a permanent place for the dock and controller.
• Flavour matters above all else, and you want both operating modes: Universal Baller V2. Allow time for assembly and handle the quartz carefully.
