About this vaporizer

DaVinci Classic is the first portable vaporizer from US brand DaVinci, released in 2011. It operates via conduction: the herb sits in a heated chamber and is warmed through direct contact, while a digital LCD display on the front shows the set temperature up to a maximum of 207 °C. In addition to dry herbs, oils and extracts can also be vaporized using the included metal inserts with cotton pads. The built-in battery charges via mains adapter and lasts around 45 to 60 minutes of continuous use; after approximately one minute of heat-up time the device is ready to use. The compact form factor, reminiscent of a walkie-talkie, was unusual for a portable with a digital display in 2011. Today the Classic is no longer available — DaVinci replaced it from 2013 onwards with the Ascent and later the IQ series. It remains an interesting piece of DaVinci history, but for daily use the successors are technically far ahead.

DaVinci's first portable

The Classic was the brand's first portable device in 2011 and laid the foundation for everything that followed. Its design was striking: compact, angular and reminiscent of a walkie-talkie — a portable with a digital display was far from standard at the time. The manufacturer marketed the range under the name Karma Classic. Two years later, the Ascent replaced the device, followed later by the IQ series.

Conduction with a digital display reaching 207 degrees

It uses conduction heating: the herb sits in a heated chamber and absorbs heat through direct contact. An LCD display on the front shows the selected temperature, with a range reaching 207 degrees Celsius. Conduction heats a load less evenly than the convection used by modern devices — but the design is simpler and more robust. For even extraction, the chamber must be packed uniformly and stirred occasionally.

Oils and extracts using metal inserts

In addition to dry herbs, the Classic can also process oils and extracts. Metal inserts with cotton pads are included for this purpose and are placed inside the chamber. This dual use was remarkable for a device from 2011 — multi-material capability was the exception rather than the rule at the time. The inserts are consumable parts and must be replaced after several uses.

Battery, heat-up time and everyday use

The device reaches temperature after around one minute — long by today's standards, but normal for 2011. One charge provides approximately 45 to 60 minutes of continuous operation. The battery is built in and cannot be replaced, while charging is only possible using the mains adapter. For a device that has not been produced for years, this is precisely the critical issue: a depleted battery cannot simply be replaced.

What followed — and what the V2 changed

A revised second generation of the original version was released, the DaVinci V2. The retailer that stocked both versions in Europe explicitly describes the V2 as considerably more reliable than the V1 — reliability was therefore the issue at the heart of criticism of the Classic. The V2 also introduced better access to the chamber, a magnetic closure and longer battery life. Both are technically outdated today: the Ascent and IQ range offer degree-precise settings and use different materials in the vapor path.
