How to Make ABV Cannabutter
ABV cannabutter is the foundation of almost every cannabis edible recipe. Made in a slow cooker with just two ingredients, it takes minutes of hands-on time — the crockpot does the rest overnight.
What is ABV?
ABV stands for “Already Been Vaped” — it’s the cannabis left over after vaporizing. Because it’s already been heated, the decarboxylation process is complete and the cannabinoids are active. You can use ABV directly in recipes without any additional heating.
Ingredients
- ½ oz ABV (already been vaped cannabis)
- 2 sticks of butter
- Crockpot
- Cheese cloth
- Butter jar
- Aluminum foil
- Mixing spoon
Instructions
- Place two sticks of butter in the crockpot.
- Turn the crockpot to high and let the butter melt fully.
- Mix in ½ oz of finely ground ABV and stir well.
- Leave on high for 20–30 minutes until the mixture reaches a gentle simmer.
- Turn the crockpot down to low, cover with the lid, and cook for 2 hours.
- Strain the mixture through cheesecloth into the butter jar to remove all plant material.
- Cover the jar with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
- Use the next day. One batch makes enough for 4 recipes.
Tips
- Grind your ABV as finely as possible before adding it — more surface area means more cannabinoids extracted.
- Start with a small dose when using the finished cannabutter. ABV potency varies depending on vaporizer temperature and session length.
- The cannabutter keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for 3 months.
