About this vaporizer

The Herborizer XL is a French handmade desktop vaporizer that demands patience but rewards it generously. Built by a small manufacturer in France from high-quality glass and sturdy heating components, it's designed first and foremost for water pipe use. You put it into its base, connect your piece, wait ten minutes for it to reach working temperature, and then settle in for a session.

Ten minutes heat-up is the defining characteristic, and it's not for everyone. The Herborizer XL is not an on-demand or quick-session device. It's a ritual piece — you prepare, you wait, and then you experience convection vapour of exceptional purity. The temperature range runs from 90°C to 230°C, which is wider than most desktop competitors and allows precise dialling for both light aromatic sessions and deeper extraction.

The entire vapour path is glass. No plastic, no metal between the herb and your water piece. That purity carries through to the flavour in a way that's immediately noticeable if you've been using cheaper or lower-quality devices. The heating element is built for long-term reliability. Glass components clean easily in isopropyl alcohol.

Dosing capsules are compatible for pre-loading. Warranty is one year. If you're building a premium home setup and water pipe integration is central to how you vaporize, the Herborizer XL deserves serious consideration. It's slow to start, but once it's there, there's very little that comes close to the session quality it delivers.

Key Facts — Herborizer XL Desktop · Heating: Convection · Heat-up: 600s · Weight: 1500g · From: €239 · Shops: 8

The Herborizer XL by Herborizer is a log-style desktop vaporizer with pure convection heating, handmade in France. The device uses a glass-on-glass system with an 18.8 mm standard ground joint and is expressly designed for use with water pipes. The temperature is adjusted via an analogue rotary dial between 90 and 300 °C.

The Herborizer XL belongs to the category of artisanal vaporizers: no app, no display, no electronics apart from the heating element. Instead, it features solid borosilicate glass and a surgical stainless steel heating core with a lifespan of over 10 years. With 6 shops in the price comparison, it is readily available in Europe.

Getting started with desktop vaping

The Herborizer XL is a pure convection desktop vaporizer with a glass-on-glass design. No display, no app, no electronics in the vapour path – just glass, hot air and a water pipe. The heating element sits externally on a stand and heats the air you draw through the glass attachment.

1. Setup and connection

Place the heating element stand on a stable, level surface. Connect it to a water pipe (14 mm or 18 mm joints fit directly). Plug in the power cable. The Herborizer XL runs exclusively from the mains – no battery, no portability. Fill the water pipe with enough water to cover the diffuser slits.

2. Heat-up

Switch on the heating element and turn the temperature dial to the desired setting. There is no digital display – you rely on the dial and experience. Heat-up time is around 5 minutes. Let the element heat fully before taking your first draw – if you start too early, you will only get warm air without vapour.

3. Filling the herb bowl

Use the glass bow l (herb holder). Grind your herb medium-coarse – pure convection works best with coarser material so the hot air can flow through unobstructed. Fill the bowl loosely, to a maximum of two thirds full. Place the filled bowl onto the heated element.

4. Draw technique

Draw slowly and evenly through the water pipe. The hot air passes through the herb, vaporises the active compounds and is cooled by the water. Each draw should last 8–12 seconds. Drawing too quickly produces very little vapour because the air does not have enough contact time with the material. One bowl typically provides 5–8 good draws.

5. After the session

Switch off the heating element and let it cool down – this takes several minutes. Remove the glass bow l from the element and tap out the spent material. The glass can be rinsed easily with warm water. Once a week: soak all glass parts in isopropyl alcohol and rinse them thoroughly. Empty and rinse the water pipe after every session.

The 5 most common beginner mistakes

  • Packing the bowl too tightly – The airflow is completely blocked. Fill it loosely; the herb should be able to move freely.
  • Not preheating long enough – 5 minutes sounds long, but if the element is too cool you will only get hot air. Patience pays off.
  • Drawing too quickly – With convection, the air needs contact time. Slow, steady draws produce noticeably more vapour.
  • Using the water pipe without water – Without water, the vapour is extremely hot. Water cooling is not an extra, it is essential.
  • Grinding too finely – Fine material clogs the glass bow l. Medium-coarse is ideal for pure convection use.

Research context: A study in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Hazekamp et al., 2006) showed that vaporisation at controlled temperatures releases over 95 % of the desired active compounds, while largely avoiding combustion by-products. Source: PubMed 16637053
