Vaporisers with water filtration: bong, bubbler and WPA explained

Anyone who combines their vaporizer with water filtration enjoys noticeably cooler and smoother vapor, gentler on the airways and more intense in flavour.

At a glance

  • Water cools the vapor to room temperature and filters out coarse particles
  • Standard bongs with a 14 mm or 18 mm joint fit most vaporizers via a WPA
  • Bubblers offer filtration in a pocket-sized format from 20 EUR
  • Too much water dampens the flavour — 2-3 cm of water is enough

What is water filtration?

With water filtration, the vapor is passed through water before it is inhaled. The water cools the vapor and filters out coarse particles. The result: velvety, cooler vapor instead of a hot, harsh draw.

Advantages of water filtration

  • Cooler vapor , water noticeably lowers the vapor temperature
  • Smoother draw , Less irritation to the airways
  • More flavour , Fine terpenes are retained, suspended particles are filtered out
  • Hygiene , water traps condensation particles

Types at a glance

Bong

The classic bong (water pipe) has a large water reservoir and a long downstem. It provides the strongest cooling and is particularly suitable for desktop vaporizers such as the Volcano or the Arizer Extreme Q.

Bubbler

A bubbler is a compact water pipe that is connected directly to the vaporizer. Ideal for portable devices such as the DynaVap or the Arizer Solo 3.

Water Pipe Adapter (WPA)

With a WPA, almost any vaporizer can be connected to a bong or bubbler. The adapter fits the 14-mm or 18-mm joint of the water pipe.

Conclusion

Water filtration turns every vaporizer draw into a gentler experience. Whether bong, bubbler or WPA , the investment is particularly worthwhile for powerful desktop devices and for anyone with sensitive airways.

How much water should you use?

The right amount of water is crucial , it may sound minor, but it makes a noticeable difference. As a rule of thumb: the downsteak or downstem should be submerged in the water by about 1–2 centimetres, no more. Too little water reduces cooling; too much risks drawing water into the vaporizer.

Ice water cools the vapor even more than normal tap water. Two to three ice cubes in the bong are enough to feel the effect clearly. Distilled water is not necessary , normal tap water works just as well.

Cleaning , as simple as necessary

Change the water after every session. Stagnant water quickly starts to smell musty and encourages mould growth. Once a week, do a thorough clean: fill the bong with isopropyl alcohol (at least 70 %), shake it for a few minutes, then rinse היט thoroughly. Coarse sea salt as an abrasive helps with stubborn deposits at the bottom of the glass.

Bubblers and WPAs can be soaked in a screw-top jar with ISO alcohol , wait 20 to 30 minutes, rinse briefly. Done.

Typical beginner mistakes

  • Too much water , condensation water can get into the vaporizer and damage the electronics
  • Wrong joint size , 14-mm and 18-mm WPAs are not interchangeable; always measure first
  • Drawing too hard , Drawing slowly and evenly produces more vapor than short, forceful pulls
  • Leaving water standing for days , Cloudy water reduces flavour and hygiene

Desktop vaporizers vs. portable devices , which is better suited?

Desktop vaporizers are by far the most common combination with water filtration , and for good reason. Devices such as the Volcano Hybrid or the Arizer Extreme Q produce denser, warmer vapor than portable devices. The bong cools this vapor down to a pleasant 25–35 °C before it reaches the lungs. This is particularly noticeable at high temperatures above 200 °C.

Portable vaporizers also benefit, but differently: a bubbler on the Arizer Solo 3 makes the vapor smoother without slowing the draw. The DynaVap M Plus as a butane device works best with a 14-mm bong adapter , so the hot butane vapor is brought to the right temperature before it is inhaled.

An important difference: desktop vaporizers usually have more airflow, which means less draw resistance with a WPA. Portable devices with weaker airflow can become more sluggish with a large water chamber , a compact bubbler is the better choice here than a full-sized bong.

As a rule of thumb: the stronger and hotter the device, the more worthwhile water filtration becomes. Desktop devices at 200 °C+ and butane devices such as DynaVap benefit the most.

Frequently asked questions about water filtration

Does water change the flavour of the vapor?

Hardly at all. Water mainly filters out fine particles and cools the vapor , the characteristic flavour of the terpenes is retained. Some users even find the vapor more intense because the heat “burns” the aromatic compounds less.

Can I use hot water?

Technically yes, but it makes little sense: hot water barely cools the vapor. Room-temperature to cold water is better. If you really like it cold, use ice water , the effect is clearly noticeable.

What bong size suits a desktop vaporizer?

For desktop devices such as the Volcano, bongs with a capacity of 300–500 ml and an 18-mm joint are suitable. Smaller bongs or bubblers are better suited to portable vaporizers such as DynaVap or Arizer Solo.

Which vaporizer is best suited?

Desktop devices benefit most from water filtration , the vapor is stronger and warmer anyway. Portable vaporizers such as the Arizer Solo 3 work very well with a compact bubbler; the DynaVap M Plus fits almost any bong with a 10-mm or 14-mm bong adapter. Anyone who rarely vapes below 190 °C will notice the difference immediately.
