Beyond DynaVap and Sticky Brick

By now, everyone knows DynaVap. Sticky Brick has established itself as an insider tip that has long since stopped being one. But if you dive deeper into the world of flame-heated vaporizers, you come across brands that rarely appear even in specialist forums. Small workshops, one-man operations, tinkerers with a workshop in the cellar — they all build devices that are hardly marketed commercially and still have a loyal fan base.

This article presents six such niche manufacturers. Not all of them are easy to get hold of. Some have waiting lists, others only ship to certain countries. But they all offer something the big brands cannot: individuality, craftsmanship and often surprisingly good vapor.

Camouflet Convector

Camouflet Convector - convection butane vaporizer

Origin: Canada Heating type: Pure convection Price range: 200-350 EUR (depending on edition)

Camouflet is a small Canadian brand that offers exactly one product with the Convector — and it does so quite uncompromisingly. The Convector is a pure convection vaporizer. The air is heated by a flame, then flows through a glass vapor path and only afterwards over the herb material. So the herb never comes into direct contact with heat.

The result: extremely clean flavour. Users describe the vapor as cooler and more aromatic than with comparable butane devices. The glass path can be cleaned or replaced individually, which makes maintenance easier.

The workmanship is high-quality. Stainless steel, glass, precise fit. Nothing wobbles, nothing rattles. The various editions — from the standard model to the limited run with wood accents — differ mainly in aesthetics, not in function.

The catch: availability. Camouflet produces in small batches. If you want a Convector, you either have to order at the right time or turn to the secondary market. New drops are announced via Instagram and the brand’s own website. Being quick helps.

Another plus point: the Convector also works with water pipe adapters. Pulled through a bong or a bubbler, the pure convection unfolds its full potential — large, cool clouds with maximum flavour.

Who is it for? Flavour purists who are willing to pay a premium for pure convection. Anyone used to DynaVap-like devices (conduction/hybrid) will be surprised by how different pure convection vapor tastes.

Vaphit QOQ

Vaphit QOQ Kit - budget butane vaporizer

Origin: China Heating type: Conduction (butane) Price range: 25-45 EUR

At the other end of the price spectrum is Vaphit. With the QOQ, the Chinese brand builds a butane vaporizer that sits in a completely different price league. Under 50 euros for a working device — that is otherwise almost unheard of.

The QOQ works on the same basic principle as a DynaVap: put on the metal cap, heat it with a lighter, wait for the click, inhale. The tips are even DynaVap-compatible, which means you can continue using your existing DynaVap accessories. Stems, adapters, induction heaters — everything fits.

The material quality is surprisingly decent for the price. Stainless steel, cleanly finished, no sharp edges. Of course, the feel is not on the level of an 80-euro DynaVap. But at that price, nobody expects it to be.

Where the QOQ falls short: vapor production. The chamber is slightly smaller and the airflow more restrictive. Experienced users describe the vapor as thinner compared with the DynaVap M7. For occasional users or as a second device for out and about, though, it is perfectly sufficient.

The QOQ is available via various online shops, including in Europe. Delivery sometimes takes a little longer if ordered directly from China — via European retailers it is quicker, but costs a few euros more.

Who is it for? Beginners who want to try butane vaporizers without spending 80+ euros straight away. Or DynaVap owners looking for a cheap backup.

Vaphit HX

Origin: China Heating type: Induction (no lighter needed) Price range: 80-120 EUR

With the HX, Vaphit takes an interesting step further. Instead of a flame, induction heating is used here. You insert a DynaVap-compatible tip into the HX, press a button, and an electromagnetic field heats the cap. No gas, no lighter, no soot.

Strictly speaking, the HX is no longer a butane vaporizer. But it belongs on this list because it serves the same ecosystem: DynaVap-compatible tips and caps. Anyone who already owns a QOQ or DynaVap can simply put their tips into the HX and effectively have an electronic device.

The heat-up time is around 8-10 seconds. The battery lasts for roughly 30-40 cycles before it needs to go back on charge. The vapor quality depends heavily on the tip used — with an original DynaVap tip you get better results than with a Vaphit-branded one.

The HX bridges the gap between the analogue butane world and electronic vaporizers. No learning curve when heating, no risk of combustion through poor timing. At the same time, the modular tip system remains intact.

Important to know: the HX is not a substitute for a full electronic vaporizer such as the Mighty or Crafty. The chamber size remains typically DynaVap-small (approx. 0.1 g), and vapor production still depends on the tip design. The HX changes only the heating method, not the basic concept.

Who is it for? DynaVap users who no longer want to use a lighter at home. Or people who like the click system but prefer more reliable heating technology.

Lotus Vaporizer

Lotus Vaporizer - classic with plate

Origin: USA Heating type: Pure convection Price range: 100-150 EUR (used, discontinued)

The Lotus is a classic that is no longer made. It still deserves a place on this list because it is actively traded on the used market and shows a completely unique approach to butane vaporizers.

The concept: a perforated metal plate is held over a flame. The hot air flows through the holes down into the herb material. Pure convection, no hot surface touches the herb. The Lotus is typically fitted onto a water pipe mouthpiece or a special wooden body.

The technique requires practice. You have to hold the flame at the right distance and angle while inhaling at the same time. Too close: combustion. Too far: no vapor. It takes a few sessions until you get a feel for it. After that, however, the Lotus delivers remarkably good flavour.

The cult potential is high. Lotus owners talk about their devices the way guitarists talk about vintage amplifiers. The combination of simple design, pure convection and craftsmanship has created a loyal community.

The only realistic way to get one: the used market. Reddit, specialist forums, sometimes eBay. Prices vary greatly depending on condition and accessories.

Anyone who finds a Lotus and embraces the learning curve gets a vaporizer unlike anything else on the market. No click, no timer, no feedback apart from your own feel. For some that is frustrating — and for others exactly the appeal.

Who is it for? Collectors and technology enthusiasts looking for a unique vaping experience and who do not mind buying used.

Dreamwood Vaporizer

Origin: Germany Heating type: Conduction (DynaVap-compatible) Price range: 40-90 EUR

Dreamwood comes from Germany and builds handcrafted wooden stems for DynaVap tips. No proprietary heating system, but artfully turned bodies made of hardwoods and tropical woods into which standard DynaVap tips are inserted.

Sounds simple? It is. But the difference when vaping is noticeable. A longer wooden body cools the vapor better than a short stainless steel stem. The wood feels more pleasant in the hand. And visually, every piece is unique — grain, colour tone and shape vary from device to device.

Dreamwood offers various models: short stems for on the go, long stems for home use, models with and without cooling fins, adapters for water pipes. Some editions have glass inserts in the vapor path. The wood selection ranges from native oak to exotic cocobolo.

The workmanship is consistently good. Clean fits, no gaps between wood and metal, smooth surfaces. For the price — often below that of an original DynaVap — you get a handcrafted product from a German workshop.

Orders are handled through the brand’s own web shop. Delivery times are short, and shipping within Europe is straightforward. Much more accessible than many other niche brands.

A tip: Dreamwood regularly offers leftover stock and B-grade items. They have minimal cosmetic flaws — a small scratch, a slight irregularity in the grain — but work perfectly. If you want to save money, look there first.

Who is it for? DynaVap owners who want to give their device more cooling, better feel and a personal touch. Also excellent as a gift.

MAD Heaters Tempest 2

MAD Heaters Tempest 2 - aftermarket DynaVap stem

Origin: Australia Heating type: Conduction (DynaVap-compatible) Price range: 50-80 EUR

MAD Heaters from Australia specialises in aftermarket stems for DynaVap. The Tempest 2 is its best-known product: a stainless steel stem with an integrated cooling system that channels the vapor through several chambers before it reaches the mouthpiece.

The result is noticeably cooler vapor than with a standard DynaVap stem. Anyone who has ever taken too hot a draw from an M-Series knows why that matters. The Tempest 2 makes the DynaVap system significantly more pleasant for longer sessions.

The workmanship is industrially precise — CNC-milled stainless steel, cleanly deburred, with O-ring seals at the connection points. The thing feels more premium than the standard DynaVap stem and is also noticeably heavier.

Downside: size. The Tempest 2 is longer and heavier than a normal DynaVap. It is not made for a trouser pocket. Cleaning also takes longer because the vapor flows through more chambers and accordingly more residue builds up.

MAD Heaters ships worldwide, although shipping costs from Australia to Europe can be steep. Some European shops already stock the products — comparing prices is worthwhile.

Who is it for? DynaVap users looking for better cooling and a more premium mouthfeel. Particularly interesting for people who prefer higher temperatures.

Why niche vaporizers?

The obvious question: why not just buy a DynaVap and leave it at that? The device works, the community is huge, spare parts are available everywhere. Why take the detour via small manufacturers?

Craftsmanship instead of mass-produced goods. A Dreamwood stem is a one-off. A Camouflet Convector is assembled in a small workshop, not on a production line. You notice that — in the precision of the fit, in the materials, in the attention to detail that gets lost in large-scale production.

Different vaping experiences. Pure convection (Camouflet, Lotus) tastes fundamentally different from conduction (DynaVap). Longer stems (Dreamwood, MAD Heaters) cool the vapor noticeably. Induction heating (Vaphit HX) removes the learning curve when heating. Each of these manufacturers solves a specific problem or offers an experience that standard devices do not deliver.

Supporting small manufacturers. In an industry increasingly dominated by a few large brands, niche manufacturers keep innovation moving. Many ideas that appear today at DynaVap or Sticky Brick were first tried out by very small makers.

Collector value. Limited editions from Camouflet or rare wood types from Dreamwood increase in value. The Lotus is a prime example: since production stopped, prices on the used market have risen. Anyone who buys early later has either a great device or a worthwhile investment.

Conclusion

Butane vaporizers are more than DynaVap and Sticky Brick. Behind the big names, there is an ecosystem of small manufacturers, some of which build better devices — at least for certain use cases.

The Camouflet Convector delivers the purest convection vapor in this segment. The Vaphit QOQ makes butane vaping accessible for under 50 euros. Dreamwood shows that German craftsmanship and DynaVap compatibility are not a contradiction. And MAD Heaters solves the biggest problem of the DynaVap system: vapor that is too hot.

Not every one of these devices is suitable for everyone. Some require patience when sourcing them, others a steep learning curve in use. If you just want to vape without having to think about it, you are better served with a DynaVap M7 or Sticky Brick Junior. But anyone willing to look beyond the obvious will find devices with real character in this niche — and sometimes even better vapor than the market leader.
