When a few simple rules are followed, swapping the battery is safe: always carry the battery in a battery case (no direct contact with coins or keys in your pocket), only buy branded cells from Samsung, Sony, or Molicel, and never use batteries with a damaged wrap. The device itself has a protection circuit; this is also the reason why "unprotected" flat-top batteries are the right choice (protected batteries are too long). With counterfeit batteries from an unknown source there is a real risk — so only buy from authorised retailers.
